Essential Maintenance Tips for Every Longboard Rider

Published by The Longboard Store on 5th Nov 2021

Longboarding is a fun hobby and a great way to get around town. There’s nothing quite like cruising down the street on your longboard with the wind in your hair. But you’ll need to take care of your board to maintain its functionality and prolong its lifespan. Check out these essential maintenance tips for every longboard rider.

Care for Your Bearings

It’s essential to care for your bearings when you want your longboard to function properly and last as long as possible. When your bearings start to squeak, it’s time to clean them. Here is a basic cleaning process for longboard bearings:

  1. Remove the bearings.
  2. Remove the rubber shield.
  3. Rinse the bearings in either isopropyl alcohol, mineral spirits, gasoline, or kerosene. Let them soak for a few hours.
  4. Dry them for about half an hour.
  5. Replace or change the rubber shield.
  6. Replace the bearings into the wheels.

Don’t Forget About Your Wheels

Much like tires on a car, the wheels of your longboard require rotation for optimal performance. Try to prioritize your wheel rotation every few weeks. This process ensures that they wear in a uniform manner and that no single wheel takes the brunt of the damage.

When your wheels start to display aging and wear and tear, it’s best to replace the set entirely.

Brush and Wash the Deck and Grip Tape

While you should avoid exposing your longboard to water, such as during rains or in puddles, that’s not always possible. If it does get wet, try to dry the deck as quickly as possible. When it comes time to clean your board, use soapy water and a nylon brush to get all the dust and dirt off the deck of your board.

Once you brush your board, use a sponge to rinse off the soapy water. Ensure the deck is entirely dry when you finish by rubbing it with a towel and then letting it dry out on its own for about four hours.
