Longboard Safety: The Dos and Don’ts of Longboarding

Longboarding is a wonderful way to express yourself and enjoy the sights of your city. Knowing the best methods for your safety and the dos and don’ts of longboarding will assist you in staying upright and avoiding complications.

What You Should Do While Longboarding

We understand the excitement of wanting to jump on your board and give it a test ride as soon as possible. But you must take the appropriate precautions to ensure you’ll return home in one piece.

Many cities seem to have a vendetta against boarders, considering riding on the sidewalks is illegal. However, the streets remain a haven for boarding enthusiasts, assuming there isn’t bumper-to-bumper traffic, and you can safely ride your longboard on an open road.

Every longboarder should adhere to the rules of the road, such as stopping stop signs and red lights, to stay out of harm’s way. Additionally, riding solo makes you vulnerable, whereas riding in a pack will keep you safer. Not only are packs more visible for drivers, but if something were to go wrong, you have a group of friends that can come to your aid.

Wear the appropriate safety equipment to protect yourself from severe injury. Scratches and scrapes may be inevitable, but you can reduce the odds of a significant head injury by wearing a helmet. Well-fitting shoes, tied shoelaces, knee pads, and ankle protectors are other items to have when longboarding.

Finally, care for your trucks and wheels like you would a vehicle. These items are integral for a smooth and safe ride. Carry a bag of the necessary tools to fix them if something happens.

What You Don’t Want To Do While Longboarding

There are more don’ts to longboarding than dos. Weather is a key component, considering wet and rainy weather causes roads to be slick, which does not create a conducive environment for longboarding. Check the weather report and prepare a plan B if you have concerns about a potential popup shower.

You will need your ears to be free while longboarding to remain fully aware of your surroundings, so headphones and longboarding aren’t the best mix if you are cruising through the city. There’s a reason why wearing headphones while driving is illegal in most places, and that thinking is applicable in this instance.

Lastly, cheaper doesn’t always mean better. If you are looking for safety gear, don’t go into the bargain bin because inexpensive merchandise doesn’t undergo rigorous testing to guarantee your well-being. Stick with the name brands that you can trust.
